Perfect Minds, Pefect Project

The only people who have the capacity to conceive of a great idea like this one are those that are obsessed with perfection, like the people at Mercedes Benz. Construct a special vehicle to carry a special racing car to events throughout Europe, and make it the fastest and most recognizable transporter the world has ever seen. But what could possibly possess the company to invest vaults of money and countless hours in the design and construction of such a one off commercial carrier? Wouldn't any existing large van suit the purpose? Obtain further advice on used mercedes and the subject of mercedez .

The transporter's conception is a story of pride, fervour, and practical sense. Before World War I began, Mercedes Benz and the remaining racing teams of Germany were caught in a bitter competition. But Mercedes emerged as the clear winner when the V-12 enthused W-154 bagged 12 of the 17 events that were held before the war. In 1952, the Mercedes management decided to re-enter the world of Grand Prix racing, and this was a reality starting from the season of 1954.

The truck was thus designed by Mercedes to be special only for its W-196, a fresh new racing model that was to be driven by a famous Argentine racer. The carrier was to be such that it was other any of its type, and easily recognized on the road as a Mercedes product. It was also required to be swifter than any of the other similar vehicles of its type, and even faster than most vehicles that ply on the Western European highways.

If you are one of the initial teams to reach the tracks you automatically got more time to train and plan out your strategies. It also meant that a damaged racer could be driven to the plant for repairs and returned to action in record time. Mercedes put in their best technologies in making the transporter. Its frame was inspired by the X-shaped one of the 300 S, while the 3.0 liter, 6-cylinder engine, and the four speed manual transmission reminded you of the ones in the 300 SL series. The four wheels were set up with hydraulic brakes that were power-assisted as an extra measure. Further your knowledge on mercedez  at used mercedes benz.

However, by far the transporter's most unusual feature was its breathtaking bodywork. The majority of the steel panels that were used were based on models that used to be popular at that time. The windshield and the doors were derived from the ones that were used in the 180 S, and so too were the finishing on the inside. It had enough space for a loading ramp, two spare tires, tools, and any other equipment that might be needed for the racing car.

The single cab was kept unconventionally up front , way too much ahead of the front axle , and the cab itself was placed seemingly too low, but the look that was obtained in the end was definitely Mercedes Benz. It had a factory blue paint that just made it all the more popular. The truck, even when it was fully loaded with 6,600 pounds, could go faster than 100 mph, something that is taken to be fast in the current times as well.

Hitting the roads sometime in mid-1954, the transporter was an instantaneous hit at the race tracks of Europe, and the U.S.as well. Actually, it was the case that the transporter drew more attention than the racers it carried. When a Mercedes Benz 300 SLR, that had entered privately at the 1955 French 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, took the lives of 80 people in a crash, Mercedes Benz retracted from public racing totally. This resulted in the racing division and the transporter being retired before that year got over.

Even though there were plans of putting the vehicle and its valuable payload in the company's museum, the total weight proved to be more than the floors could support and the idea was ditched. After its untimely termination, the company got a lot of inquiries, such that it had to start on the plans of a replica in 1993. With the aid of an outside fabricator, a few plans, and photographs, the company finished their work in 2000. Now, this amazing vehicle by Mercedes Benz does not have to sink in to fameless oblivion , and shall ever be retained in racing car history in the form of the replica.
